| Reason for working with Pat | I started training with Patrick to improve my off-ice strength/conditioning program. I was preparing for the Olympic Winter Games in the sport of curling. I met with Patrick shortly after we had won the Olympic Trials in April 2009. We trained leading up until the Olympic Winter Games in February 2010. I wanted to leave nothing on the table when I competed at the Olympics. I was strong both physically and mentally because of my training with Patrick. I have really grown as an elite athlete by partnering with Patrick. After the Games, I chose to continue to work with Patrick. I was getting married in the summer (July 2010) and was planning to continue to curl.I continue to train with Patrick. I enjoy the challenging and diverse workouts that he puts me through. |

| Reason for working with Pat | Initially, I sought out Pat to gain strength, power, endurance and confidence as a rock climber. I also wanted Pat to get me in shape for ice climbing (climbing frozen waterfalls).Then Pat inspired me to become a rower, a sport brand new to me. I needed Pat to teach me everything a rower should know.
After two years, Pat still coaches me toward specific climbing and rowing goals but there’s more to it–I work with Pat for training that is personalized, comprehensive, challenging, and engaging. I work with him because he gets me to dig really deep, be strong and aim high. |
| Outcome | ROCK CLIMBING: I achieved my rock climbing goals by training with Pat. I climb at harder grades now. I pack more power overall for the demanding sections of a climb, I have a stronger core to execute advanced moves, and my grip strength has improved so much that I hang on longer, use smaller holds better and push through cruxy moves even while my mind is trying to say “Stop … you’re too tired.” I can now lock-off and cross through, examples of moves I used to struggle with. Pat’s workouts were intentionally designed to make me strong in these ways. As my physical performance improved, so did my confidence, breath control and concentration, resulting in mental muscle so necessary when fearful thoughts arise. Pat taught me a lot about mental toughness. I can dig deeper and climb farther or longer because of practicing pushing through pain or fatigue in Pat’s workouts.ICE CLIMBING: Ice climbing is even more fun now that Pat trains me for it. I can’t ice climb as much as I’d like because those long frozen water falls are so far from home. With Pat’s systematic sport-specific training under my belt, the climbs on my first day of a my ice climbing trip felt like I’d already been at it for weeks. I could scale relentlessly vertical ice climbs and powerful overhanging mixed climbs without becoming instantly exhausted. My calves didn’t scream the next morning from all that standing on only two front crampon points stuck in the ice. My grip strength was ready for hours of holding my weight by handle of an ice axe. The trip began with my triceps, back and shoulders … my whole body well conditioned for hundreds of deep squats, powerful axe swings and one arm lock-offs per day. It’s just a great feeling to arrive ready to climb strong because of Pat’s effective training. |
