Training with the SkiErg

Last week I added a new piece of equipment, a SkiErg, to my collection at the gym. Anyone who as ever skied knows that it is a total body, impact-free workout. Not only does the SkiErg give you specific strength and metabolic benefits of skiing, but it also can be used for fat loss and developing muscles that most individuals try to focus on in the gym.

When I first got on the SkiErg I realized quickly that the more you give the more you get and there was a tradeoff just like the Airdyne. I instantly had a love/hate relationship with the SkiErg. As a coach I like when my athletes have to be in complete control of the resistance because it really shows how mentally tough they are and it teaches them how to deal with pain and adversity.

The SkiErg makes it is easy to burn calories because you use compound movements while having low impact on your joints. It works your upper body and core with a pulling motion and lower body with a squat.

I plan on training skiers as well as adaptive athletes and those who are rehabbing from injury. I have already used it for golf-specific swing motions and on an athlete with an injury to their lower body. By siting or kneeling, an athlete can take out any leg movement, which really isolates the core and upper body.

I have just scratched the surface with the SkiErg, but I can guarantee that if you ever stop by my gym, you will not be disappointed by the SkiErg workout I throw at you. Plus, you can always say that it is not as bad as the Airdyne.
