During this time of year, my clients are very excited about visiting with friends and family, attending parties, and having an excuse to eat the calorie-laden cookies, sweets and other items they generally stay away from during the year. However, being healthy doesn’t mean that holiday rituals have to be avoided. You “can have your cake and eat it too.” I will have three blog postings over the next month that contain 50 Tips to help you stay healthy during the holidays.
Try to incorporate at least 15 of the 50 Tips into your life during the holidays. Remember, you can have holiday treats and be healthy during this time of year.
- Commit a certain amount of time each day to workout no matter what.
- Force other people to work around your schedule, so you get your workout in regardless.
- Turn your phone off at 8 p.m. – Rest is more important than anything and studies show that using your phone or other mobile device at least one hour before going to sleep, interferes with good sleep
- Every time you check social media for the month of December, do one burpee.
- Don’t give everything to everyone. You know those people who talk your ear off about nothing…cut them out. Be nice in how you cut them out but time is limited so spend it with people who deserve it and are good for you.
- Do 10 of something every hour-on-the-hour. You could accumulate 100 push-ups, squats, pull-ups, lunges, or burpees, a day.
- Learn to multitask especially while watching tv. During your favorite show, do an exercise or series of exercises throughout the program.
- Watch your Sunday football game on a stationary bike. It doesn’t have to be hard but the calories will add up. Also, this routine will most likely limit how many drinks you will have or how many nachos you consume.
- You don’t have to drink at every party. However, if you are going to have alcohol, drink two classes of water for every alcoholic drink you do have.
- If you are going to overeat, earn it in the gym prior to over indulging.
- The holidays are a good time of year to go on a mass/strength gain workout program, so plan accordingly in the gym.
- When shopping, take the open parking spot furthest away from the store and always climb steps instead of taking escalators or elevators.
- Get 8-9 hours of sleep. You are not missing anything productive after midnight.
- Shop online to save time for working out.
- If you are looking for deals on workout equipment check out Rogue on Black Friday.
