I am always expounding upon the importance of staying with organic, whole, and natural food sources. Nutrition doesn’t have to be confusing. In fact, it can be simple. Just stay with unadulterated foods and realize the benefits.
A recent study has thrown a spin on the simple rule that Omega-3 fatty acids are good, and all others are bad. This recent study has shown that Omega-6 fatty acids found in nuts, seeds and many vegetable oils are actually good for you. It did not study the impacts of Omega-6 fatty acids that come from processed and junk foods.
This study found when looking at blood levels of Omega-6’s, that men in the highest fifth group had a 43 percent lower risk of death from any cause and a 46 percent lower risk of cardiovascular death as compared to men in the lowest one-fifth. This Finish study looked at 2,480 men aged 42 to 60, following them for an average of 22 years.
The thought process Omega-6’s was that they generally increase inflammation. Omega-3’s, the fats in fish oil and in eggs from free range chickens, lower it. Many studies have also suggested that high Omega-6 intake increases the risk for heart disease. But this new long-term study suggests Omega-6s can be good for the heart depending upon their source.
I would not take this study to mean that all Omega-6’s are good for you. Processed or junk foods do contain Omega-5’s and are bad because of all the sugars, salts and chemicals these foods have in them. I would take this study to mean that you can rest assured that when healthy organic, natural foods such as organic vegetables, nuts and seeds are good for you and you need not worry about the Omega-6’s coming from these food sources.
So, you see, nutrition can be easy. Just make sure you stick with high quality food sources that are natural, organic and not processed.
