Explosive power is a useful tool in just about any sport. It can be incorporated into many workouts, and I liked to use heavy squats to recruit greater amounts of muscle fiber, and then I turn to explosive power. But, don’t go to failure.
Working in broad jumps with the heavy squats, you need to pay attention to the distance the athlete is hitting. If the jumps drop by 4 – 5 inches with each jump, then the message is getting muddled, and it’s probably time to move on, even if the planned reps didn’t happen.
A medicine ball toss is one of my favorite exercises – using a high pull-up to toss it over so there is an emphasis on maintaining explosiveness (if the ball doesn’t go over the bar it doesn’t count as a rep). Adding in fat bar pull-ups will also shock the grip.
