Just breath to burn calories? Not really, but it’s part of the process…

dsc08987It may sound crazy, but a interesting fact is that you lose/burn fat by breathing. But no, I don’t want to leave you with the impression that you can sit down on the couch with a couple of donuts and try hyperventilating to lose weight. You actually have to workout to start the process. Fat is released as carbon dioxide when you exhale, but you need the aerobic activity to turn that fat into carbon dioxide. Also, to lose noticeable weight (and associated fat) you have to create a caloric deficit to lead to noticeable fat loss. Breathing alone won’t create that caloric deficit. You need to workout hard, with weight bearing exercises and aerobic activity, to really make true gains in burning that fat. Working out hard, will not only turn fat into heavy breathing, but will also more effectively burn fat by helping to create fluids that leave the body in various ways, such as sweat, urine and tears. Therefore, in helping you to lose weight, I always recommend that my athletes drink at least 100oz of water a day. You need that liquid not only to hydrate your muscles, you need it to carry the fat out of your body.

So,workout hard, breath heavy, and drink a lot of water. However, remember you also need to do the following to do maximize your results: eat appropriately to achieve your goals, make sure you do enough recovery activities, and focus on stress management. It’s all part of the Pat’s Gym philosophy.
