I love workouts that involve heavy breathing. It’s amazing what controlled breathing can do for your workouts. Also, it’s a skill you can take with you once you leave the gym.
Intervals are a great way to become aware of your breathing and to learn to control it. This type of workout is a great breathing structure we use at the gym. It can be used with any machine or really any movement that will tax your breathing. In general, I try and keep all the intervals similar or to increase slightly over each of the 6 blocks (negative splits). This format will help teach you or your athlete to pace better and to have a more realistic idea of their abilities.
My goal with this structure is usually total exhaustion. Over the entire hour, it breaks down to 9 minutes of work. As the anxiety builds, I always try and remind myself of that and make those minutes count. Give this workout a try….
