I like data to make a strategic decision on how to train. I will throw in tests in my workout to see where I am and to know what do I need to focus on, during my journey of working out. On this day, I wanted to have a power test on the Concept2 BikeErg. I love the BikeErg and am playing with it so that I can fine tune my knowledge of it.
On this day, I measured output on the first 8min, and to see if I could match it on the second round. I made sure that if I was more than 50 watts different between the first a second, I took the average, and used it as a base for a different day.
The purpose of this workout is to get a baseline number with which I could calculate future efforts. Data such as this is essential to understand and refine programs. Almost everyone resents taking notes, but when they start I have never met anyone who has regretted it.
Therefore, I recommend that you take time to test some numbers, record the data, and design something from it so that you make it worth your time. To get good at something, it takes a strategic plan, and you need data for that. Here is the workout I did:
