Want to sleep? Think magnesium!

DSC02677There is a positive link between magnesium and sleep disorders. Most people only think that magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in our bones. However, magnesium does more than that. It will help you sleep. I have posted a previous blog that discussed the benefits of magnesium, and how it helps repair muscles faster when it is consumed in higher doses.

Magnesium deficiency is associated with higher levels of stress, anxiety, and difficulty in relaxing. Specifically, magnesium interacts with an important neurotransmitter that helps us sleep.

One recent study shows that those individuals who consume more magnesium fall asleep faster, and spend more time in bed asleep. This study didn’t show you will sleep longer, however.

First of all, if you’re going to take a magnesium supplement you should talk to your doctor first because it can interact poorly with other drugs. Also, if you take too much magnesium it can cause stomach cramps, diarrhea, and nausea.

Second, consider getting magnesium with your foods. Leafy green veggies have a lot of magnesium. In addition, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains are another way to go.
