My family – Roza, Cully and Lolo — are a priority. With that priority comes a responsibility. My health is a priority too, so when I workout I workout with my family whenever I can. I will never force them, but I find ways to get them excited about it. Simply, I make it fun. If they can associate push-ups, skierg, pull-ups, and burpees with having fun, they will make it a part of their lives. They will not dread working out because it is a habit and it won’t be work. If we can form fun habits at a young age, they will perform them their entire life. If you learn to workout at a later age, you will find working out is hard. But, if you learn it at a young age and it is associated with fun, it won’t ever be work. You will associate that feeling of a hard workout as not discomfort that you fear, it will be a feeling that is familiar. This will be a habit. It’s really a mindset.
I want my kids to be strong confident adults who are active and have healthy habits. Healthy adults will be happy adults. They will learn a value working on that they should not quit when the workout is tough. This skill will follow them outside of the gym. They won’t quit when things are difficult.
Many adults make excuses for their kids such as “they are young”, “it’s inappropriate”, or “you’re too intense.” My motto is that one small thing over time can lead to one big thing. Remember to start out slow, never make them do it if they don’t want to, and make it fun.
This is a workout that my kids love:
30sec ski >155m
90sec rest 5x pull-ups or 10x push ups
20 rounds build by one meter each round
This was a great workout. I really think that Cully surpassed me with push-ups (with some help), and that Lolo learned from Roza that pull-ups can be fun. Try it and let me know what you think.
