Athlete of the Month – At Pat’s Gym, we profile those athletes who are passionate about improving their health, who have goals, and who achieve them. This month we are profiling one of the athletes who has set a new bar; he is driven, down to earth, and very passionate. He is a great member of our community; Here is Patrick!
Patrick has been with the gym for about 6 months now. He wanted to find new athletes to train with and a place that would support a healthy culture. His wife worked with Pat, and he is glad she recommended Pat’s Gym.
When he started working with Pat and Pat’s Gym, Patrick was in a rut, and wanted to focus on prehab and focus on injury prevention. Also, he wanted to “climb out the dad bod, weekend warrior where he had been stuck.
At first Patrick didn’t think he had any weaknesses; however, after working with his coach, they realized that Patrick had a weak grip and was lacking upper body strength. Now, the grip is stronger, and he now has in sight 100 pull ups as a “warm up.”
Overtime, Patrick’s goals have changed from more generic goals, to lifestyle goals. Now his goals are evolving toward eating better and taking better care of himself to perform more consistently. Not more reps or more weight but being able to sustain pushing himself to his limits.
The continued personal growth keeps Patrick coming back. Patrick loves the community at Pat’s gym, knowing that others are putting in their work, motivates Patrick to buckle down and push through. Patrick loves the monthly challenges and the fun events (like the Ski World Cup event). These activities are great ways to hang out and make fun healthy choices together.
Patrick loves Online Coaching. At first, Patrick didn’t understand nor was he interested in Online Coaching. However, after working with Pat Gilles with Online Coaching, Patrick is impressed with how it works so smoothly and makes a lot of sense. It is so flexible, and the workouts are very thought out, and they can be done any day, anywhere, and in any situation. Pat Gilles has designed various workouts for him such as airport travel day workouts, vacation partner workouts, and hanging out on the beach with kids’ workouts. It’s amazing that the workouts will always kick your ass, fit your time budget, and make you feel better. Patrick is in awe, but finds it hard to accurately describe how it works….but it does work.
He is amazed in general when he travels and does different sports and activities how much more endurance and power he has and now can push longer, like 100 instead of 8. He’s sticking with Pat’s Gym and Pat Gilles for Online Coaching. He is glad he found the community and remains motivated!

The February Monthly Challenge – The February Monthly Challenge is a complex movement, that involves Olympic lifting. Don’t be deterred or intimidated but inspired and feel the challenge. Many athletes feel intimidated with Olympic lifts, with a snatch being the most difficult. This challenge involves the basic movements and does not involve a snatch. The clean is the most basic Olympic lift, with a press and jerk being a close second. Don’t shy away from this challenge, use it to discover movements you need to focus on. Let’s see how fast you can do it!
The February Monthly Challenge is simple, so not understanding it is not an excuse. Try this one, and see what your time is:
30 Clean and Press/Jerk @ 75% BW for time
The Barbell must touch the ground each rep

The January Monthly Challenge – The January Monthly Challenge was short, but fun. It helped our athletes get into 2019 with a bang! It was a lot of fun, and we had great participation. The January 2019 Challenge was:
10 burpees
8/10 cal ski
Score is total calories and total burpees
The Challenge continued until an athlete could not complete the amount round of exercises in a minute
.
The winners of the Pat’s Gym January Monthly Challenge are Patrick H with a score of 115, and Gretchen with a score of 144. Great job!
